Tekken
(LAST UPDATE: 4/27/06)

Profile

General: Eight fighters from around the world compete in an elite martial arts tournament hosted by the evil Heihachi Mishima. Once the seven other fighters have been defeated, you will fight your character's "unique" sub-boss and then Heihachi himself. The original Tekken offered a different style of gameplay for the time. Each character has your basic punches, kicks, special moves, and throws; similar to Virtua Fighter 1 and 2, (Tekken's only real competition in terms of 3D fighting)... But in Tekken, the stages go on forever, as you'll never encounter a wall or an "end"... While this gameplay element offered some unique fun, as characters can run and tackle each other after creating a distance, the presentation was quite ugly (can't find a better word)... The actual backgrounds were 2D, and basically just followed the camera around, giving the game an unrealistic "warped" feel to it... Some gamers were turned off by this effect, but others overlooked it, and more concerned with the gameplay...
Even though the graphics weren't nearly as impressive as some of the other 3D fighting games in '94, Tekken managed to stand out, whether you liked it or not... With it's many interesting (and sometimes odd, or simply ugly) characters; each with new, fresh moves and animations (sometimes incredibly awkward), it's hard not to stand out... Tekken wasn't for everybody, since the overall appearance of Tekken could be considered a bit "sloppy" or "awkward"... However, it attracted a small fan base, and once it got the ball rolling with Tekken 2, there was no turning back...

Comment: Tekken was the classic that spawned some truly great sequels... An enjoyable game for the time, but certainly nothing "epic"... The characters needed a bit more work, in terms of design, personality, balance, as well as the animations... And believe it or not, some of the same animations from the original Tekken, are still in use in today's sequels like Tekken 4...
