Profile
General: Also
known as Street Fighter Zero: Fighter's Generation in Japan... Well,
I knew someone would do it eventually... And whatdya' know, Capcom totally
ripped off the name of your favorite fighting game website, which has been
up and running over 6 years before this project. Not to mention the title
of their most recent DVD release,
Street Fighter Alpha: Generations...
Geez Capcom, can't you come up with your own names? However, I won't sue
them, because they sent me a free copy of the game. Hahahaha! If anyone
is going to make Fighter's Generation: The Game, I'd want it to be Capcom!
This
package includes arcade perfect versions of Street
Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street
Fighter Alpha 2 Gold (which features different versions of some characters,
and an extra character, Cammy),
Street
Fighter Alpha 3, and Super Gem Fighter:
Mini Mix! This package is indeed arcade perfect, so don't
expect the exclusive characters from PSP's SFA3:
Max; but Guile, T.Hawk, Fei Long, Evil Ryu, and Dee Jay do make their
appearance as "secret" characters in SFA3, because once you beat the game
with one character, you unlock a version of SFA3 based off of the home
versions.
And
perhaps the coolest thing you can unlock is a little something called Hyper
Street Fighter Alpha, which is similar to that of Super
Street Fighter 2 Turbo as it appears in Street
Fighter: Anniversary Collection, because you can select all the different
"Alpha" versions of the characters and pit them against each other for
the first time ever. The character selection is pretty much Street Fighter
Alpha 3's, and this is also the mode where you can select even more alternate
versions of characters, some of which are based off of Street Fighter III
(which allows parrying), and the Marvel VS series (which allows some characters
bigger fireballs and new moves). This mode also includes a kickass sound
test menu, with tracks ranging from Super Street Fighter X2 to Final Fight,
and of course all the tracks from Alpha 1-3 (CPS1 AND CPSII if that means
anything to you). Unfortunately this mode can only be played 2 player,
or training for 1 player... And you're limited to Dramatic Battle stages
only, but all characters have their own theme! Specific to Alpha 1, 2,
and 3 at that. Awesome! But a 1 player arcade mode really wouldn't have
hurt!
To sum
it up, the entire Street Fighter Alpha series has finally been ported to
a home console perfectly. Load times are non-existant (besides when you
select your game), the story modes and endings are intact, and everything
you loved from the individual games (like the classic intros, BGMs, character
dialogue, and forgotten backgrounds) is all there. The only weird thing
about the package is that, by default, the "sharpness" on all the games
is turned down. So you'll notice as soon as you first play it that it's
a bit more blurry than you remember. But that's okay, just go to options
and turn the sharpness all the way up, and bingo... Your 2D sprites are
back to their original goodness.
And
for the first time ever, you can also play "Dramatic Battle" in Street
Fighter Alpha and Street Fighter Alpha 2, although you and your partner
share the same life bar! Which doesn't make much sense, unless they're
attached by some invisible string, because if your partner is KO'ed, you
are too. It adds some interesting strategy, but I prefer SFA3's Dramatic
Battle, where you each have your own life bar. It's fun stuff though!
Anthology is definitely a sweet package from Capcom, and I always thought
they'd eventually pack up the Alpha series into one box and release it
one day. And they definitely did it right... Evey version of Street Fighter
Alpha you could ever want (besides Max) is here... And Pocket Fighter
(Super
Gem Fighter: Mini Mix) breaks up the monotony of the more serious 2D fighters
for some extra fun! This package is a Street Fighter fan's dream come true.
It's like having a 90's arcade in your living room. And for those of you
that missed these great games the first time around, now's your chance
to catch up and see all that you've missed... And also get those skills
sharpened.

Comment: The
Japanese version carries quite a flashy name I must say... The
Fighter's Generation is officially immortal
now. Thanks Capcom.
